Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370344
AB OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of a horizontal programme where
AIDS Education is integrated with community activities for the youth.
METHODS: An AIDS education/awareness programme was developed a total of
80 youths age range 12-20 years were randomly sampled--20 from each clan
of Secondary School going category. The programme was integrated with
other social community activities during holidays. RESULTS: The level of
HIV/AIDS awareness rose dramatically as exhibited in the number of songs
composed about AIDS (i) The devastating mature of AIDS (ii) Safe sex or
complete abstinence from sex before marriage etc CONCLUSION: Adolescents
can readily learn about AIDS and other issues, if AIDS education
programmes are integrated into some of their favourite activities.
Evidence of quick learning was seen especially when it was not very
obvious that awareness was being created. Other communities in the
developing countries could emulate integrated intervention programmes to
save their youths.
